Dukes of Broxstonia (Series 2) - Sells to UK Broadcaster

The Dukes of Broxstonia are the hottest band to come out of Broxstonia in years. In fact they’re the only band to come out of Broxstonia. Ever!

Following a successful run as a short 10 x 45 second series, the Dukes’ new series sees their no dialogue, wacky comedy expanded into a 10 x 3 minute series which debuted at MIPCOM in early October. Both series have recently been sold to CSC Media Group in the UK for screening on their boys skewed "Kix" channel .

The Dukes of Broxstonia were produced by Sticky Pictures and created by Stu Connolly and Suren Perera. The new series has been pre-sold to the ABC and Cartoon Network for the Asia Pacific broadcast rights. The series is distributed by ACTF and Mango Distribution.

Brown Bag Films & Sticky Pictures Making Dreams With Dream Factory

Sticky Pictures, Kyla May Productions and Brown Bag Films have today announced they will co-develop and co-produce the animated tween comedy series Dream Factory (52 x 12’).

Dream Factory is a comedy series that follows the adventures of apprentice-dream maker Tommy Winks in the Dream Factory, a magical dream-making studio in the clouds. As an apprentice to the mythical Sandman, Tommy is learning to master the art of dream making. It’s not just about extraordinary ingredients and getting the recipe right; every night Tommy has to put on a showstopper that puts his audience to sleep- and keeps the Bogeyman at bay.

Dream Factory is designed and created by prolific creative director, brand creator and designer Kyla May (Smirk, Flea-Bitten, Kyla May Missbehaves, SheZow). It will be produced by Australia’s Sticky Pictures (Me & My Monsters, Pearlie, Dennis & Gnasher) and award-winning Irish animation studio Brown Bag Films (The Octonauts, Olivia, Noddy in Toyland)

Me & My Monsters Nominated For Kidscreen Award

Me & My Monsters has been nominated for a Kidscreen Award in the Best Non-Animated or Mixed Series for Kids Category.

Winners will be announced at the second-annual Kidscreen Awards ceremony, taking place on Thursday, February 9 in New York at Kidscreen Summit.

Me & My Monsters tells the story of the Carlson family who have recently relocated from Australia to the UK to discover there are three out of control and hilarious monsters living in their basement.

The half hour live action & puppet series was shot in Sydney's Fox Studios.
It is a co-production between Sticky Pictures and Tiger Aspect Productions with the Jim Henson Company (UK).

Bindi's Bootcamp Goes Into Production

Sticky Pictures is proud to be working with the great team at FremantleMedia Australia and FremantleMedia Enterprises on the new series Bindi's Bootcamp featuring Bindi Irwin.

The shoot started recently up at the Australia Zoo. Here's the official ABC3 press release:

Bindi Irwin, Australia’s favourite young wildlife expert, today begins filming Bindi’s Bootcamp - a new 26 x 25min adventure game show for ABC3.

Produced by FremantleMedia Australia, in association with Sticky Pictures, the series will offer young adventurers the chance to experience intimate wildlife encounters with Bindi through a series of physical and mental challenges.

Bindi said: “I’m so excited to start filming and to meet all of the contestants. It will be great fun putting them through adventure challenges as well as educating and testing them on their wildlife knowledge.”

In each episode three teams of two go head-to-head in three rounds of numerous challenges based on inner strength, knowledge and endurance, as well as having lots of messy fun along the way.

The nine highest scoring teams across the series will then reassemble for the season finals where one team will ultimately be crowned ‘Wildlife Warriors’.

ABC TV’s Children’s Head of Commissioning and Development, Carla de Jong, said: “A fantastic amount of work has gone into the games, set designs and challenges for this series. We can’t wait for Bindi and the team to put the very first contestants through their paces in this action-packed, wildlife series.”

Sydney based Sticky Pictures has been named Children’s Television Producer of the Year at the 2011 SPAA Independent Producers Awards in Sydney.

Headed by Donna Andrews, Justine Flynn and Stu Connolly, Sticky Pictures this year produced live action sit-com Me & My Monsters and animated series the Dukes of Broxstonia. Their previous projects include animated series Dennis & Gnasher and Pearlie based on the Wendy Harmer books.

The SPAA Independent Producer Awards, established in 2001, are awarded to SPAA members who have produced an outstanding body of work that has contributed to the advancement of the independent production industry. The peer-voted awards were announced last night during the Screen Producers Association of Australia annual conference.

Sticky Pictures has commenced production on a second season of their short form animated kids series the Dukes Of Bröxstônia.

The first season of the Dukes came about thanks to a shorts initiative by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation when launching kids channel ABC3.

On board again is commissioning broadcaster the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, with Cartoon Network having acquired Asia Pacific broadcast rights. The ACTF and Mango Distribution will distribute the series.

The Dukes are teenagers Arj, Barj and Larj who hail from a fictional country Bröxstônia. The series follows the band on tour – which can mean anywhere from a music festival to a planet ruled by a tyrannical baby. They also have a rival boy-band, the Lukes from neighbouring country Flöxstônia.

The hand-drawn sketchy style, wacky storylines and no-dialogue approach has seen the first series prove extremely popular with kids. Episodes have also played at animation festivals in Australia, Korea and the UK, and the series won the most popular flash series award at the Digital Media Online Festival.

“Sticky Pictures is super-excited to be producing a second series of the Dukes of Bröxstônia. In series 1 we saw crazed alien fans, giant lice, jealous superheroes and gooey ear wax clones. We can’t wait to see what the Dukes get up to in series 2!” says Donna Andrews, Executive Producer, Sticky Pictures.

Herb and Ray are buddies who host The Yum – the weirdest and wildest cooking show on the web. Their lack of cooking knowledge and kid-like curiosity make for out-of-this world adventures with lots of action, comedy and explosions. Herb and Ray may be teenage misfits with no money, no girlfriends, and no clues – but on The Yum, they are legends in their own lunchtime.

Asia/Pacific Distributor Mango Distribution has appointed George Sakkalli as Sales Manager Asia, where he will be responsible for finding new properties for the distributor to develop across all platforms, along with seeking out broadcast partners for new and existing properties in the pan Asia region.
Sakkalli will join Mango’s growing team and will be based out of Singapore. He reports to company directors Wayne Dearing (Top Draw animation) and Donna Andrews (Sticky Pictures – also Mango Sales Manager Australia, NZ). We're very excited that Scary Therapy is part of the animation programme at this year's Melbourne International Film Festival.
Scary will screen on Sunday Aug 1. Check the site for programme details, some great films also showing, like Lost Thing and features like the Illusionist and Summer Wars.

in other festival news, both Scary and the Dukes of Broxstonia will feature at the Sydney International Animation Festival held at UTS in September.

Scary Therapy and Monster Auditions (the Phil Episode) were selected for Wiesbaden International Weekend of Animation in Germany.

Everyone's favourite fairy hits DVD & Nickelodeon In May

Australian producer Sticky Pictures announce more deals for their hit series Pearlie, based on the best-selling books by Wendy Harmer. The series will make its home entertainment debut across Australia thanks to a deal with leading distributor Madman Entertainment. Two volumes entitled "Hurly Burly" and "Magic In The City" will be available wherever good fairies shop from May 5. A third volume, “Twirly Whirly” will also be available June 30.

And in more great fairy news, Pearlie will debut on Nickelodeon Australia in the high rating children's timeslots of 830am weekdays from Monday May 3.

Pearlie follows the life of a fashionable young urban fairy in charge of Jubilee Park, a magical oasis in the centre of a bustling big city. This funny, charming animated series is based on the best-selling books written by Australian comedienne, radio personality and author Wendy Harmer.

This week we found out they've been been selected in the TV Film category for Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF) 2010 in Seoul, Korea in July.

Monster Double At Annecy 2010

Sticky Pictures are celebrating the selection of their animated series of adult comedy shorts Monster Auditions into the prestigious Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2010.

The series, produced for SBS Australia in 2009, was selected for the TV Category. In an unexpected twist, their short film Scary Therapy, based on the shorts was also selected in the short film category (non-competitive).

“After we finished the shorts we knew the material was strong enough to work in another medium. With editor Zen Rosenthal, we crafted a film that focussed on the monsters with bigger problems best viewed from the psychiatrist’s chair” says writer/producer Stu Connolly.

Scary Therapy has already played at festivals including Flickerfest (Australia), Klik Film (Netherlands) and Animest (Romania) & Animanima (Croatia). Much to the surprise of director Suren Perera (who also animated, designed and storyboarded all the shorts).

“Being so close to the shorts I wasn’t convinced how it would work as a film. But having both selected for Annecy is amazing. It’s a huge honour” says Perera.

As well as creating Monster Auditions, Stu & Suren have collaborated pilots for Disney, Nickelodeon and most recently a series of shorts for ABC3 called The Dukes of Bröxstônia also produced by Sticky Pictures. The Dukes debuted on ABC3 recently and are already causing a buzz. “The Dukes have been selected for MIAF (Melbourne International Animation Festival),” says Perera. ”We’re in the “Late Night Bizarre” section, which is awesome!”

Me and My Monsters, a 26 x 30 minute live action children's entertainment series from Tiger Aspect Productions Ltd, The Jim Henson Company Ltd and Sticky Pictures Pty Ltd is currently in pre-production in Sydney, Australia with production scheduled for early May 2010.

The series has been commissioned by BBC CBBC in the UK, ZDF (Germany) and Network Ten and Nickelodeon Australia. Distribution is being handled by BBC Worldwide.

The Jim Henson Company (UK) and Tiger Aspect Productions are working in partnership with Australia's Sticky Pictures on this UK/Australian co-production.

"Me and My Monsters" tells the story of the Carlson family who have recently relocated from Australia to the UK to discover there are three out of control and hilarious monsters living in their basement. For ten-year old Eddie Carlson, these houseguests are the best three friends a kid could have, but they are also three more rowdy kids for Eddie's working Mom, a constant source of chaos and stress for his highly-strung Dad and an ongoing embarrassment for his teenage sister.

"Me and My Monsters" is created by Mark Grant ("Perfect World," BBC and "Star," ITV). The comedy stars human actors and three monster puppets developed by the world-renowned Jim Henson's Creature Shop(tm) ("Where the Wild Things Are," "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"). The series is Executive Produced by Tiger Aspect's Greg Brenman and Rebecca de Souza, The Jim Henson Company's Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford, and Donna Andrews of Sticky Pictures. Scary Therapy at Flickerfest Sydney

Sticky Pictures' short film Scary Therapy has been selected for the 2010 Flickerfest short film festival happening January 8 - 17 in Bondi Beach Sydney.

There were 1600 entries and only 100 selected. This marks Scary Therapy's Australian premiere.

Flickerfest is Australia's only Academy Award accredited short film competition - so who knows what will lie next for Scary.... scary really.

Scary Therapy screens on Monday January 10 at 9pm at the Bondi Pavilion and again on Wednesday 430pm.

Legendary Australian comedienne, radio personality and author Wendy Harmer will be busy in the kitchen mixing spells and spatchcock on Network Ten as her animated comedy series Pearlie, based on her top selling children’s books, launches the same week as her new role on Celebrity Master Chef.

Pearlie premieres on Network Ten October 3 at 9.30am and will screen Saturdays at 9.30am and Sundays at 7.30am throughout the year. Celebrity Master Chef launches on September 30 on Network Ten.

Recently Sticky went back into the editing suite and cut a new little short film entitled 'Scary Therapy', based on some of the Monster Auditions shorts.

We love our monsters so much it seemed crazy not to show the world.

With our editor Zen Rosenthal (The Editors) on board, the film took shape. Scary Therapy features only a few of the monsters, focusing on the characters who really are undergoing therapy on the couch. So it's Phil, Sam, Joel, Leon and our shapeshifter Eric. Additional music by Nick Wales.

So now to enter some festivals. Tentacles crossed!

Pearlie Episode Nominated For Writers Guild Award

We're pleased to announce that an episode of Pearlie written by Stu Connolly (Sticky Pictures Co-owner and series script editor) has been nominated for an Australian Writers Guild award in the children's category.

The episode "Dude Ranch" was one of the first episodes in the series. In this ep, Jasper moves in with Pearlie after his tree home is cut down.

The AWGIE's, as they are known, only nominate scripts they feel worthy of an award - some years there's only one nomination and one winner. So a nomination is a honour in itself. In 2007 Stu won an Awgie for Best Interactive for Chiko Accidental Alien. Winners will be announced late August.

Pearlie is based on the books by Wendy Harmer. Sticky Pictures is producing the series with Nelvana for Network Ten in Australia and YTV in Canada. The series will air on Ten later this year - stay tuned for an air date!

Monster Auditions Back On Air

Monster Auditions is back on air on SBS Saturday nights from June 28th 2009. This weeks episode is about a bigfoot who's suffering some celebrity anxiety. Everywhere she goes someone is trying to take her photo - including our film crew!
A brilliant performance by Ona Nurkkala, a native Fin, makes this one of our favourites!

The site has all episodes of the show to play - at this time they are only viewable in Australia.

But we're hoping that will change very soon if the show is picked up internationally!

Monster Auditions Launches

We're very excited that our little series Monster Auditions debuts this Saturday night at 8:28pm on SBS.

It's a great slot right between Mythbusters and the Iron Chef. Don't blink as you will miss it - the episodes only go for 1 minute.

Monster Auditions was created by Sticky's Stu Connolly and designer Suren Perera who previously collaborated on the award winning hip hop short Dirk Breaka http://www.renmotion.com/db.html on Nickelodeon.

MONSTER AUDITIONS are ten one minute short monologues of monsters who are visiting a life coach. The monsters are classic B-grade movie fare - zombies, vampires, blobs and a human fly - but their surrounds are the streets and buildings of urban Australia.

For this series we chose 2D characters with photographic backgrounds - many shot inside the SBS studios in St. Leonards near our Pearlie production office.

Monster Auditions came about via a funding initiative between SBS and Screen Australia to promote the extraordinary talent of animation filmmakers in Australia - and Mr Perera is surely one of them. The series will be distributed worldwide by SBS International. SBS website coming soon. Oh and music by Nick Wales of Coda!

Welcome to the Sticky Pictures Australia blog.

As at April 2009 we're knee deep in our two productions - Dennis & Gnasher for Channel 9 Australia and the BBC UK, produced with our partners Red Kite Animation in Scotland. Dennis & Gnasher is based on the comic books published by DC Thompson.

And Pearlie, a co-production with Nelvana for Network Ten and YTV Canada. Pearlie is based on the books by Australia's legendary comedienne Wendy Harmer.

We've also finished production on a series of animated comedy adult shorts for SBS Australia entitled Monster Auditions which are on air and soon to be online.
